Our Karate Class was first formed in February of 1991 at the First Baptist Church of Yucaipa. We were formed under the guidance of the Church Staff and the Omega Christian Karate Association headed by Sensei Manual Corona and Sensei John Moore.
The Class was formed to teach students Martial Arts in a Christ-centered atmosphere.
Students were originally taught a Shito-Ryu (She-toe-Rue) style of Karate in a way based on Japanese values and traditions. Students are now being taught an original style created by Sensei Buskirk. The new style was designed to be more of a modern method for self-defense and is called Nishi Kaze Seido (West Wind System).
How we differ from many Martial Art Schools is that we teach God’s Word instead of Oriental Philosophies. We believe our Power comes from God and not from within ourselves and from prayer.
In June of 1993, our Head Instructor, Sensei Denny Buskirk, became the Founder and Director of the American Christian Karate Association. Sensei Joe Robinson was then awarded the position of the first Assistant Director of this new Association.
The organization of ACKA has given us recognition in the Martial Arts World, which will broaden and expand our outreach.
In January of 1998, ACKA expanded. It opened a Dojo at Yucaipa Christian Church, under the leadership of Sensei Brian Boyd. Sensei Boyd teaches the style called Kyokushin. (This dojo has since closed.)
In January 2011, Sensei Joe Robinson opened the dojo at Bryant St. Baptist Church in Yucaipa.
After almost 30 years, on August 6th, 2020 the class was moved from Bryant St. Baptist back to its birthplace – Grace Point Fellowship (formerly named First Baptist Church of Yucaipa). We are excited to have come “full circle” in terms of our training venue and excited about what our future may hold at Grace Point.
